Friends and Supporters of Anam Cara
Since the start of Anam Cara in February 2006, so many family, friends and strangers, who are now friends, have given us support, encouragement and advice, which has been invaluable in helping us launch Anam Cara this year and continue to contribute to our growth and development as an organization.
Although everyone directly involved with Anam Cara is 100% committed to the ongoing growth and development of our organisation, we would like to acknowledge other wonderful people and organisations whom have offered us their time, expertise, services and facilities, free of charge to get us to where we are today. Their support has contributed hugely to the ongoing success of Anam Cara and the impact we are having in Ireland.

We would be delighted if you could sponsor one of our events in 2009. This could be either Formal Event or one of our informal Social events. For more details please contact Sharon at

A huge thanks to those who have helped Anam Cara
For those of you who have generously donated funds, We have been putting your donations to good use, developing our Website and Parent’s Message forum, organising various activities around Ireland to bring bereaved parents and siblings together to help reduce the social isolation they often experience after the tragic death of their son or daughter. In 2009 there will be activities happening in many parts of Ireland as each region develops.
All of these activities are facilitated by a wonderful group of bereaved parents who, despite the huge tragic loss they have faced, continue to contribute to Anam Cara’s growth. They are the very essence of what Anam Cara is all about, Bereaved parents reaching a hand out to help newly bereaved parents and siblings along this very difficult journey.
We would like to thank you all for your incredible commitment and generosity, Anam Cara is really making a difference, and newly bereaved families do not have to journey alone any more. We hope you will continue to support us in 2009.
We have included a small selection of stories from around Ireland about some of the wonderful people and communities who have fundraised or helped Anam Cara in the past.
Co. Dublin
We received a very generous donation from a participant in the London City Marathon, who competed in this very tough event in memory of her brother Karl. Anam Cara is very grateful to anyone who has donated through 2008, your generousity will help Anam Cara grow into an National Voluntary Support Organisation, who's main objective is to support bereaved parents and siblings, throughout Ireland, after the devastating loss of a precious son/daughter, brother/sister .
The Confirmation Class of 2008
It has become a tradition with the confirmation class of Divine Word School in Marley, Rathfarnham to donate a portion of any gifts received at their confirmation to a Charity of their choice. This is always driven by the pupils rather than the teachers or parents.
The pupils take this very seriously and put a lot of thought, discussion and research into which Charities they will support. Their main criteria was that it had to help children in some way and in the end they decided on three beneficiaries, Anam Cara, OLHC and the Make a Wish Foundation. There is no fixed amount, and each pupil was free to make their donation (or not) according to their own priorities. The boxes are left on the teachers desk and the children put in their donations as and how they choose.
We would like to publically thank the 2007 Confirmation Class for their amazing donation to Anam Cara, which amounted to 700 euro which I’m sure you’ll all agree is quite something, particularly given that there were under 50 pupils (aged between 11 and 12) between the two classes and it was part of a three way split. Such inherent generosity and thoughtfulness in children so young is a wonderful indicator of the adults they will become.
Wall2Wall Christmas Lunch
Each year Toni Wall and her dynamic team organises the best Christmas Lunch in town, and all the money raised at this lunch is donated to Charity.
Anam Cara was thrilled to be the charity to benefit from the Wall2wall lunch this year.
What a wonderful afternoon at Venu Restaurant in Dublin City Centre. A combination of lovely food and service from Venu’s fantastic staff, together with great company, made this lunch very special.
The highlight of the Afternoon was the raffle. There were plenty of prizes, in fact “one for everyone in the Audience” and the craic continued long after the lunch ended!
We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Toni and her team for a wonderful afternoon and for the amazing donation they have given to Anam Cara.
Co. Donegal
Anna Mc Groddy (co-founder Anam Cara) and Kate McGroddy travelled from the highlands of Donegal to run the Flora Ladies Mini Marathon on the June bank holiday weekend.
They were rewarded for their efforts by raising €470.00 for Anam Cara and have pledged to beat their time next year….
In fact in 2009 we are hoping to get Mums from all over Ireland to take part in the Ladies Mini Marathon. In our Pink and Blue Anam Cara T. Shirts, we could do this in honour and memory of our Son or Daughter.

The Angel Art Sanctuary, Alet Les Bains, France
Earlier this year a group of Mums from Cork, visited the Angel Sanctuary in the South of France. They recieved a wonderful welcome from Eugene and Lorrie, who have relocated their beautiful Art Sanctuary from Rathdrum in Co Wicklow, to one of the most peaceful and spectacular areas of France, where peace truly prevails, high up in the mountains
Eugene and Lorrie have built a special Anam Cara Garden, for bereaved Mums and Dads to visit from all over the world. To find out more, please visit www.angelartsanctuary.com
Formal Bereavement Event
On the 5th of November Anam Cara held their first formal Bereavemen Event in Cork. The evening provided the right setting to meet with other parents as well as hearing Peter Hanlon, Bereavement Specialist with the HSE, give a presentation and overview of Parental Grief and Loss.
There was plenty of opportunities, after the Presentation to have a cup of tea and chat with Peter and other parents. In 2009, there will be a series of these events happening, please keep an eye on our website for further details.
We would like to thank the Mums and Dads who attended this event and gave us the necessary feedback we needed to run similar events throughout Ireland.
